World War II French Military Figure. Better known as "Colonel Fabien", Pierre Georges was a member of the French Communist Party. In 1939 he fought in the Spanish Civil War with the International Brigades. Joining the French Resistance after the invasion of France by Nazi Germany in 1940, in 1943 he was captured and tortured but escaped. He later died while fighting for Alsace's liberation. In his honour, the square where the French Communist Party headquarters is located, the metro station and many streets in towns with communist mayors are named after him.
