Here is what I have been able to piece together about my grandpa William Edgar Mcilroy. · Born June 13, 1884 in Franklin County, Arkansas to William Christopher Mcilroy and Mary Catherine Hamm.· Got Martha Smith pregnant in approx. May 1906.· Had a son named Otis Day Mcilroy in Februrary 1907 by Martha Smith.· Married Martha Smith in Arkansas on July 21, 1907.· Martha Smith died between 1907 and 1910.· Got Nannie Durning pregnant in approx. May 1910.· Fathered a son, Robert Lester Mcilroy Conley(b. February 26, 1911), by Nannie Durning, but they never married. She eloped with a boy named George Everett Conley after getting drunk at a dance.· 1910 U.S. Census: Edgar Mcilroy and 2 yr. old son Otis are living with his brother Charles Scott Mcilroy and his family in Franklin County, Arkansas.· After 1910: William Edgar moves to Oklahoma.· Before 1917: William Edgar marries Alice Lula Witt in Oklahoma.· 1917- William Edgar enlisted into the military in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. However, according to his death certificate, he never served. · JAN 24, 1917: William Edgar and Alice Witt have a son named Wilburn Earl Mcilroy in Rhea Oklahoma.· 1920 U.S. Census: William Edgar and wife Alice L. Witt are living in Panola, Texas with son, by 1st wife, Otis D. (12 yrs. old) and son Wilburn Earl (2 yrs. 11 months old). They are living beside Alice Witt's parents, John William Witt and Ida Belle Phillips.· MAY 30, 1921: William Edgar and Alice Witt have a second son named Calvin Bruce Mcilroy in Texas.· JAN 22, 1924: William Edgar and Alice Witt have a third son named Ray Lloyd Mcilroy (my dad) in Gracemont, Oklahoma.· Sept. 19, 1925: Alice Witt dies of congestive heart failure at the age of 29. William Edgar Mcilroy makes the funeral arraignments.· Oct. 1925: William Edgar Mcilroy makes a payment of $40 towards the balance due for Alice Witt's funeral. There is no record that he ever paid the balance due for the funeral or the four burial plots at the cemetery. At some point between his wifes funeral, Sept. 21, 1925, and her father filing a complaint in the Caddo County Court, Dec. 20, 1926, William Edgar takes his three sons, by Alice, to her parents house, drops them off and never returns, abandoning his children. · December 20, 1926: Alice Witt's father, J.W. Witt, files a complaint with the Caddo County Court, Anadarko, Oklahoma, alleging that William Edgar had deserted his children.· March 5, 1927: Caddo County Court, STATE vs. McIlroy Children(all three children were present and involved in the complaint), declares William Edgar Mcilroy an unfit parent by reason of his desertion of his dependent and neglected childrenand places Wilburn Earl (10) with his mother's brother and his wife, Henry and Naomi Witt. They are made probate officers of the court and he is paroled to them with the understanding that they must return him to the court if and when the court orders them to do so. It is still undetermined as to what the court did with Calvin (6), Ray (3) and possibly Otis (16). · JAN. 22, 1927: Picture taken of Calvin and Ray on Ray's 4th birthday from their new home in Hydro Oklahoma at their new parents house and sent to their brother Wilburn Earl in Arizona thanking him for the Christmas money. JUL. 1927: We have a picture taken at this time of John William Witt and Ida Belle Phillips Witt while they were visiting their grandson's Calvin and Ray at the Porter's home in Hydro Oklahoma. 1930 U.S. Census: Wilburn Earl Witt, 13 yrs. old, is listed under the name of Earl Witt as an adopted son by Henry L. Witt and family. This is Alice Witt's brother who is living in Texas. It states that his birth father was born in Arkansas and his birth mother was born in Oklahoma. This is the same as William Edgar and Alice Witt. His adopted ?? parents were both born in Texas. However, Wilburn Earl told his family that he was never adopted by the Witt's. His two daughters told me that Henry and Naomi always called their dad Earl Mcilroy, not Witt. · 1930 U.S. Census: Calvin Bruce Mcilroy and Ray Lloyd Mcilroy show up as adopted sons of George E. Porter and Stella V. Hastings in Custer County, Cedar, Oklahoma. It is still undetermined as to whether they actually adopted the two boys or were also made probate officers of the court. November 17, 1950: William Edgar Mcilroy dies of natural causes in Houston Texas. He had been diagnosed with Hypertensive Heart Disease and Cirrhosis of the liver, as per his death certificate reference to "Jeff-Davis record". This is referring to the Jefferson Davis Indigent Hospital in downtown Houston) before his death. Because there were no known relatives or friends, his body was sent to the Baylor Medical College on Nov. 21, 1950. I talked to the person in charge of the Willed Body program at BMC and she confirmed that they did receive his body and it was entered into the research program and scheduled for Anatomical Surgery on March 16, 1951. She also confirmed that after using his body for research BMC cremated the body and dispersed his ashes. · 1962: Otis Day Mcilroy, according to the California Death Records Index, died in Los Angeles, California. He fell, hit his head and died. The autopsy revealed that he was a cronic alcoholic. He never married.· Calvin Bruce Porter ultimately moves to Yakima, Washington, and marries twice. Having one daughter and two infant sons that died by his first wife and two daughters and a middle son by his second wife. He died of a heart attack while in Korea working as a civilian employee in 1970.· Ray Lloyd Porter moves to Wichita, Kansas and marries. Having two daughters by his first wife. After the war, he gets a divorce and moves to Clinton, Oklahoma. He marries a second wife and has a daughter followed by four sons. He died of a heart attack in the Veterans Center in Norman, Oklahoma in 2008.
