The fire that claimed the lives of seven children and one adult early Saturday in a mobile home west of Bedford apparently started beneath the floor of the trailer and the victims were probably unconscious & died from carbon monoxide poisoning before the fire reached any of the bodies, Dr. John Pless, Lawrence County coroner said today.
Dr. Pless said the findings of State Fire Marshall William C. Goodwin coincided with his.

He said the evidence showed that the oil heater in the house had a leak and escaping oil had been seeping through the floor. It apparently became ignited by a fault in the electrical wiring.

Dr. Pless said that the bodies of the three children that were pulled from the dwelling by the father and a neighbor ____ the flames had reached the bodies and had all minor burns on their backs and soot over the rest of their bodies, indicating that the back burns were caused from the floor under them which had ___ very hot.

It is probable, the coroner said, that all eight victims had been overcome by carbon monoxide poisoning by the time the fire broke through into the trailer.
The fire in which the persons died was discovered about 12:25 a.m. Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward Lake, parents of four of the little children, were at a home about 300 feet east of the trailer where they formerly resided and where they were doing some work.
