HOYT WILLIAM BREWSTER SR., LDS STALWART, DIES AT 78

Hoyt William Brewster Sr., who served on the general boards of the Sunday School and the YMMIA of the LDS Church and was a former medical association executive, died July 23, 1988. He was 78.
Mr. Brewster was executive vice president of the Utah State Medical Association and the Salt Lake County Medical Society until his retirement in 1982. Recently, he served as a consultant in physician relations at Primary Children's Medical Center. Mr. Brewster began his career at age 17 as a messenger for the Utah Savings & Trust Co. His career included banking, real estate and insurance before he purchased his father's advertising and printing business, which he operated for 26 years.
Mr. Brewster served on the General Board of the Sunday School of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 1984, he was ordained a patriarch in the Salt Lake Bonneville Stake. He served in several other capacities in the LDS Church, including mission supervisor of the Sunday School and Mutual Improvement Association, member of the Yale Ward Bishopric and as the Bonneville Stake YMMIA superintendent.
He was later called to serve on the General YMMIA Board and as the bishop of the Garden Park Ward, where he served for 14 years. Upon his release, he served on the Bonneville Stake High Council and was later appointed to the General Board of the Sunday School.
He enjoyed sports, especially handball, and played on several basketball and baseball teams. He also enjoyed gardening, reading and fishing. He also enjoyed spending time at his recreation home in the Island Park area on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River in Idaho.
Funeral will be July 27 at noon in Garden Park 2nd Ward chapel, 115O E. Yale Ave. Friends may call at 260 E. South Temple, Tuesday 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday 10:30-11:45 a.m. at the ward. Burial will be in Salt Lake City Cemetery.
