Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 12, 2004 at St. Peter the Fisherman Parish, Holy Redeemer Site. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. William O?Brien with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
Bernice was born April 30, 1921 in Two Rivers, daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Jakowicz Michalkiewicz. She was educated in Two Rivers. In 1944, Bernice married Luke Ebel. He preceded her in death in 1969. On Dec. 29, 1973, she married Elmer H. Free. Bernice worked at the Aluminum Goods and the Two Rivers Elks Club, where she retired from in 1983. She was a member of the Ladies of Sacred Heart Church and the church choir.
Survivors include her husband: Elmer H. Free, Two Rivers; daughter and son-in-law: Janice and Bruce Matte, Manitowoc; two grandchildren: Todd and Dori Matte, Howards Grove; Michelle Matte, Sheboygan; two great-grandchildren: Lexie Marie and Luke Andrew Matte; four stepsons and their spouses: Elmer F. and Lila Free; Harlan Free; Leroy and Diane Free; Dan and Diane Free, all of Manitowoc; 17 stepgrandchildren and nine stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister: Esther Dushek Nelson, Manitowoc; and a brother and sister-in-law: Joseph and Judy Michalkiewicz Jr., Racine. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by a stepson: Jerome Free.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, June 11, 2004 (TONIGHT) at Klein & Stangel Funeral Home, Two Rivers, from 5 to 8 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. led by Father Bill. Visitation will continue on Saturday, June 12, 2004 at St. Peter the Fisherman Parish, Holy Redeemer Site from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass at 10 a.m.
Bernice was a giving and caring woman, her door was always open to family and friends.
The family extends a special thank you to the Rev. Bill O'Brien, Dr. Diaz, the nurses from Aurora Hospice and family and friends who made it possible for Bernice to live her final days at home.
