Accident Takes Life of Elderly Two Rivers Man

This city’s nationally recognized traffic safety record, with no traffic fatality since July of 1949, came to an end late Saturday night as a result of an accident in which an 84-year-old resident died two hours later.

The victim was William C. Glandt of 1408-16th St., retired Kahlenberg Bros. Co. machinist and former commercial fisherman. He was struck by a car driven by Lawrence N. De Bauche, 33, of 2310 Garfield St., at the intersection of Washington and 16th streets, at 11:30 p.m. Saturday. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, said death was due to cerebral hemorrhage at the right temple and a possible skull fracture. An inquest will be called, he said.

De Bauche told police that he was driving his 1950 model Buick sedan, with his wife, Mabel, east on ?th Street and was about to turn left onto Washington Street. At that point, De Bauche said his wife said, “Watch out, there’s a man in front.”

Felt No Impact

De Bauche said after turning onto Washington Street he felt no impact but stopped and ran back to the scene. De Bauche said his wife remained with Glandt while he went to the Diamond Bar to phone police and gain assistance. Returning he said Glandt got up, asked for his hat and wanted to go home.Police Officer Leonard Mraz substantiated De Bauche’s account that the man he struck with his car desired to go home. However, the emergency car of the Fire Dept. was summoned and Glandt was removed to the Two Rivers Municipal Hospital. He died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

Glandt, it was learned, spent several hours until shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday playing cards with his grandson, John Antonie, and his wife, Janet, at the Antonie apartment at 1600 Washington St. His last visit, it was learned, was at the Diamond Bar at 1606 Washington St., where it was learned he drank a single glass of liquor.

Funeral services for Glandt will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Klein & Stangel Inc, Funeral Home, Two Rivers, and at 10 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church, Two Rivers, the Rev. H. J. Schmitz officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Two Rivers.

Worked as Tester

Glandt was born in the Town of Carlton, Kewaunee County, March 28, 1874, a son of the late Frederick and Amelia Radtke Glandt. When he was a child the family brought him to Two Rivers where in his youth he worked at the old Mann Brothers Pail Factory. He became an early employe of the Kahlenberg Bros. Co., Two Rivers, for years engaged as a tester of gasoline and Diesel marine engines, and for many years up to his retirement 15 years ago was employed in the firm’s assembling department. For a short period during his employment at Kahlenbergs he was engaged in commercial fishing in Two Rivers, operating the tug Earl A. which establishment was located on the site of the Cool City Cleaners at Two Rivers. He married the former Anna
