Fr. William Shelley is my First Cousin RIP

Born in the Bronx, Fr. Shelley was the cherished son of the late Michael and Margaret (Nee Gunning)whom is also buried here and the loving brother of the late John and Robert. Fr. Bill was the cherished uncle of four nieces and nephews and ten grand- nieces and nephews. A graduate of Dunwoodie Seminary Class of 1950, Fr. Shelley was ordained a priest June 3, 1950 and his first assignment was Good Shepherd parish, Rhinebeck, NY. Fr. Shelley served as Associate Pastor at St. Martin of Tours, Our Lady Star of the Sea, and St. Malachy. In May of 1960 Fr. Shelley initiated an Actor's Club that met on matinee day. The Actor's Club lasted for 18 years and from that sprung an annual retreat day given on the last Sunday in February where Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen preached. In February, 1978 he was appointed Pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle and in November, 1979 was assigned to the Church of St. Agnes where he was the Associate Pastor until his retirement in July of 2000. Fr. Shelley was active in the Courage Program in Manhattan and although retired he remained an active part of the St. Agnes community. Fr. Shelley had always expressed that he was impressed with the large numbers of those good lay people who come to daily Mass, their close attention to their prayer life, the Rosary and Sacrament of Confession. From 1978 onwards he would be with the group of lay people saying three rosaries on Tuesday nights during rush hour at Grand Central Station. He was a part of Operation Rescue and the Priest Moderator of the St. Agnes Soup Kitchen. In his Priestly lifetime, Fr. Shelley was the Spiritual Director of the Legion of Mary and was attentive to their needs as he considered the Legion the prime spiritual organization of any parish. In June 2009 Fr. Shelley was appointed Senior Priest at St. Patrick's Cathedral and in 2010 served as Senior Priest in Residence at Our Lady of Good Counsel, NYC, his final assignment.
