He was known as "Snortin' Jake". He was a preacher, and when he got enthusiastic, he made a peculiar noise; hence the nick-name.

He fathered 7 children with Margaret (This would be Jacob's first wife, Margaret Felkey); the last two were twin girls born Sept. 8, 1846. Margaret died 5 days later. In December 1846, he married Harriet Lewis and they had 18 children. He was a father to 25 all together.
