Don was an elementary teacher who truly cared about his students. He battled diabetes since his youth. He lost a leg to the disease, but came back to teaching even more enthusiastically than before.

His final days were tragic ones. His wife, Vivian Wallar, had just visited him in the hospital in Upland, when she was brutally murdered in the parking lot.

Don held on to life a few more days, finally succumbing the day after Vivian's memorial service.

They were buried next to each other on the same day, February 2, 2001.
