United States Consul. Ordained in 1864, Merrill served as a chaplain in the 49th U.S. Colored Infantry during the American Civil War. In 1882, Merrill was appointed as the U.S. Consul to Jerusalem, serving until 1886. Throughout his life, he also contributed as an archaeologist and an author.
