Veteran of the American Revolutionary War as a private and a Major General in the War of 1812. During the War of 1812 he commanded the Second Division composed of the 2nd and 4th Brigades of the Connecticut militia.

John Hubbard was son of Rev. John Hubbard and Rebecca Dickerman, he first married Anna Atwater who died in 1778. He married Martha Bradley, May 13, 1780, New Haven, and they had 5 known children.
Widowed again in 1811, he married Sally Thompson, January 1, 1812, Hamden.
