Samuel was the son of Barnabas Kenyon and Susannah (Clarke) Kenyon. He was married to three wives 1) Susan Cross 2) Hannah and 3) Freedom Gilman.

Samuel Kenyon had nine sons and one daughter. (The obituary for his son, William R Kenyon indicated that he, William, was the youngest of 10 children.) He had seven sons with his first wife, one daughter and possibly a son with his second wife, and one son with his third wife.

Samuel was born in Caughnawaga, Montgomery County, New York in 1790. (His headstone reads 1789, other records have the year listed as 1790 or 1791). Broadalbin in Fulton County was created from a portion of Caughnawaga. He married his first wife, Susan Cross, about 1813. Her maiden name was given in the Biographical Sketches of State Officers and Members of the Legislature, published 1861, pages 213 & 214, for their son, Marquis L. Kenyon.

He lived in Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York on the 1820 federal census, with three males under ten, born between 1811 and 1820.

On the 1825 state census, he lived in Ellisburg, showing 7 males, one eligible to vote, and one married female under 45. He had 10 acres of improved land, owning 6 meat cattle, 4 horses, 15 sheep, and 6 hogs. Neighbors included Ebenezer Wells (2 males, 3 females) and James A. Hill (4 males, 5 females). Samuel had three additional sons between 1820 and 1825, for 6 male children by 1825.

On the 1830 census, he was still in Ellisburg, with one son born between 1811-1815, two sons born between 1816-1820, and three sons born between 1821-1825. This confirms what was seen on the 1825 state census.

His first wife, Susan Cross died on 16 July 1832 at 40. She died one week following the birth of their son Marvin M. Kenyon. Susan had been married for about 19 years. She was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Mannsville, Jefferson County, New York in 1832.

Samuel married his second wife, Hannah in 1833. Hannah also died in Jefferson County, New York in 1837. She was buried in the same cemetery as his first wife. They had a daughter, Hellen M. Kenyon, born about 1834, in Oswego County, New York. They also had one unidentified son born about 1835, per the 1835 state census.

The 1835 state census showed he lived in Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York. There were 8 males and two females. One male was born during the preceding year. His daughter was born about 1834. At this point, he had seven sons and one daughter living in 1835.

A land record between Barnabas Kenyon & wife Betsy and Samuel Kenyon and wife Hannah on 28 May 1836, signed 1 Jun 1836 to Jonathan Fish Jr., lots/parcels located within the towns of Ellisburgh and Lorraine for $800. All parties were living in Jefferson County at the time.

In July 1837, Samuel purchased 300-plus acres with two federal land grants in LaGrange, Indiana. Perhaps, he and his brother planned to go to Indiana. Soon after, Samuel married his third wife, Freedom Gilman in 1838. From a Gilman book, Samuel was listed "of" Oswego, Oswego, New York. Their son, William Rose Kenyon was born in December 1839 in Jefferson County, New York. The couple remained there. William was the youngest son, a total of 10 children, per his obituary.

Samuel Kenyon was listed on the 1840 census as living in Volney, Oswego, New York. He was 40-49, and his wife (Freedom) was 30-39. One male under 5 (William), one male 10-15 (1825-1830), one male 15-20 (1820-1825), one female 5-10 (1830-1835), Hellen M. He was living 7 houses down from Benson Sherman 30-39 (1801-1810), to whom he sold his land in Indiana, which was recorded 17 August 1840, in Lagrange County, Indiana showing both parties of Oswego County, New York.

Samuel and Freedom were listed on the 1850 New York census as living in Williamstown, Oswego County, New York with their son William. Samuel is a farmer. His son and daughter with his second wife, Hannah are not living with them.

Samuel and Freedom are listed on the 1855 New York census record living in Oswego E.D.2, Oswego County, New York, where he is a farmer. Their son William, was born in 1840, in Jefferson County, New York. Also, their granddaughter Hellen Kenyon was born in 1847.

Samuel and Freedom are listed on the 1865 New York census living in Oswego, Oswego County, New York. He indicates that he was born in Montgomery County, New York. Freedom is listed as being born in Connecticut. Living with them is son William, born in Jefferson County, New York, granddaughter Helen Kenyon, born about 1847, Monroe County, and grandson Samuel Kenyon, age 2, born about 1863, in Oneida County, New York. Samuel indicates he was married three times, Freedom only once.

On the 1870 census, Samuel, age 77, and Freedom, age 70, are living in Oswego, Oswego, New York, where he is listed as a farmer owning land.

The Oswego Daily Times, 16 May 1878 lists his obituary, the service held at the home of his son L.L. Kenyon, Esq. His remains were buried in Riverside Cemetery.

Cemetery records show he was buried in Lot 50 Section L. Owners of Lot 50 were Wood and Kenyon (Book A, page 394).
