Reginald was born in Moncton New Brunswick, the son of Arthur Gautreau and Norma Gautreau of Waltham MA; the brother of Pvt. Romeo Gautreau USMC of Plt 3091, Co. H, 3d Recruit Training Battalion, MCRD Parris Island SC.

Reginald had enlisted in the US Marine Corps on April 7 1966 in Boston MA and upon arriving in Vietnam on July 4, 1967 he was assigned to and serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month of February elements of the 5th Marines were in heavy contact with NVA and local force guerrillas during the Tet Offensive. Clearing out the enemy and securing Hue City in Thua Thien Province was a daily battle pitting the Marines against the hostile forces in house to house clearing fire fights. On February 6, Company G and H moved in the attack to seize the Hospital Complex across from the Citadel and the Song Huong (Perfume River) and during the day long battle nine men were killed in actions and many more were wounded. LCpl Gautreau fell mortally wounded from hostile rife fire.
