He married Louie Miller Sept. 2, 1934 and they lived in Afton for six years before buying a farm in 1940 in Lincoln township in Union county. They resided there for 33 years until they bought a home in Creston in 1974.
Although farming was Billy's first choice of occupations, in his younger days he ran a Creamery route. For six years he also was a part-time USDA and Livestock reporter in 15 to 20 counties. He was a field assessor in Lincoln township for 18 years and a trustee for Lincoln township for a number of years.
After moving to Creston, Billy worked for Des Moines Grain Exchange at the Creston Co-op for 7 years, taking samples of grain for the government. He was employed with the Larkin Funeral Home for some time and was on the Union County Sheriffs Posse for several years. He also worked on the election board in Lincoln township.
He was a longtime member of the Presbyterian Church in Creston. Billy & Louis never had any children, but did enjoy their many nieces and nephews. Billy & Louie had a never-ending love for each other.
