Richard was raised in Front Royal, Virginia, graduated from John S. Mosby Academy in 1960 and from Virginia Tech in 1966. He went on to become a systems engineer with John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and was employed with the Lab for 35 years, at which point he retired after many different positions and initiatives within the Space Department. He put his heart and soul into his career and thoroughly enjoyed his profession with a passion.

He lived life to its fullest and looked at every situation as a learning opportunity. He was an engineer by trade and applied his expertise to everything he was faced with. Richard loved to travel and explore and learn new skills. He loved to ski, fly his plane, play tennis, design and build, work on cars, and too many other hobbies to list. He had many talents and became a master of anything he tried. He loved to travel and his journeys took him many places. Wherever he traveled to, he fully immersed himself in the culture once there. He fell in love with the Central and South American culture and this is where he spent his fi nal days. He was loved and respected by many of the locals in Costa Rica and Columbia and earned the nickname "Loco Gringo" (crazy American). These 2 words sum up our Father perfectly. He lived life, had fun and looked at everything as one big Adventure. He enjoyed the Ride!
