MEENAN REV. FRANCIS P., C.S.Sp.
Age 95, of Bethel Park, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, died Friday, August 21, 2009. Father Meenan was born January 31, 1914 in Pittsburgh, PA. He professed his vows August 15, 1939 at Holy Ghost Novitiate, Ridgefield, CT and was ordained to the priesthood June 16, 1944 at St. Mary's Seminary, Ferndale, Norwalk, CT. His first assignment was associate pastor at St. Mark's Parish, New York City (1945). Between the years of 1947-1980 he served the Congregation as bursar and professor at St. Mary's Seminary, Norwalk, CT, teacher, guidance counselor, and community superior at Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, PA, Novice Master at Holy Ghost Novitiate, Ridgefield, CT, and bursar at the International Novitiate in Farnham, Quebec. In 1981 he was assigned ato Duquesne University where he worked in campus ministry for eight years before becoming superior of the Trinity Hall community for three years. He was Associate Pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Emsworth, from 1992 until his retirement to Libermann Hall, Bethel Park, in 2004. Fr. Meenan was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Ellen Gallagher Meenan, and his brothers James, Monsignor Joseph, John and Thomas. He is survived by his nieces, Claire Taylor, Memphis, TN, Frances Meenan, Pittsburgh, PA, Caroline Covine, Cary, NC, Roseanne Metz, Cleveland, OH, Kathy Guia, Sydney, Australia, and brother-in-law, Rev. George Wilkins, Bathurst, Australia. There will be viewing at The Spiritan Center, Bethel Park, on Tuesday, August 25 from 9:00-11:00 AM followed by Mass of the Resurrection. Burial will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery, O'Hara Township, Pittsburgh, PA. In memory of Fr. Meenan, donations may be made to the Spiritan Congregation, designated for retirement or for the education of future Spiritan Fathers, 6230 Brush Run Rd, Bethel Park, PA 15102.
