Mr. Sotero "Terry" Alferos Abiba, 93, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Tuesday, July 22, at Sentara Bayside Hospital.
He was the husband of Norma Abille Abiba. .
Mr. Abiba was born in 1910 in the Phillipines. .
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1927 to 1947. During his tour he was the personal steward to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and later President Harry S. Truman for 16 years. He also served on board the USS Texas and USS Missouri in the Pacific Ocean. .
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 168. .
He enjoyed telling stories of his tour in the White House including giving the Prime Minister of England, Winston Churchill, a haircut under an oak tree in Camp David and fishing trips with President Roosevelt in the Chesapeake Bay on board the presidential yacht. .
He is survived by one son, James Sotero Abiba Jr. and wife Sally of Frederick; one daughter, Anita Marie Abiba of Frederick; six grandchildren, Jimmy Lee Abiba, Quinn Adrien Abiba, Jennifer Nichol Abiba, Christina Marie Abiba, Morgan Delvin Orcutt and Shannon Marie Eyler; and four great-grandchildren, Zachery Tyler Abiba, Mary Ayla Abiba, Ali Sotero Abiba and Nejat Feyzullah Abiba. .
Public viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 24, and from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 25. .
A Mass of the resurrection will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 26, in the Catholic Church of St. Mark. .
Interment will be held in Colonial Grove Memorial Park..
