FRED LESPERANCE (d. 1929)

TWO RIVERS MAN IS BURNED TO DEATH
POURS NAPTHA ON FIRE, FLAMES ENVELOPE HIM

Fred Lesperance, 32, Victim of Tragedy Yesterday, Is Terribly burned by a burst of flame from the open furnace door, when he poured naptha from a can into a smouldering fire to revive it, Fred Lesperance,32, Two Rivers, was rushed to the hospital at one o'clock Thursday afternoon, from his home in Two Rivers and after lingering until nine o'clock last night passed away. Although everything possible was done to save his life, the burns about his upper body and face as well as internal burns suffered when he breathed the hot blasts from the furnace were so serious that he gradually grew weaker and breathed his last nine hours after the accident.

Lesperance, who was employed as a tinsmith at the Robert Suettinger Co. in Two Rivers was preparing to return to his work from his home, 1922 School street, when his wife asked him to stir up the furnace fire to take the chill off the house. When he reached the basement he noticed that the fire was smoldering.

There was a can nearby containing either naptha, used for cleaning, or gasoline. Lesperance poured some of this into the open furnace door.

Rushed to Hospital
Instantly there was an explosion and a sheet of flame enveloped him and set his clothing on fire. Running from the home in flames, his wife and neighbors came to his aid and threw water over him in an effort to put out the flames. Dr. Farrell was summoned and realizing the seriousness of the burns wrapped Lesperance in a sheet and rushed him to the municipal hospital at Two Rivers in his car. But his burns were so serious that he could not rally from the shock.

The deceased was born at Coleman, Wis., 32 years ago and came to this city a few years ago to make his home. He was married to Irene Parent of Ironwood, Mich., eight years ago, who survives him with two small children, (private). His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Lesperance, of this city, two brothers, Armedas and Theodore, and three sisters, Mrs. Albert Ciha, Mrs. John Kindille, and Mrs. Joseph Lesperance, all of this city, also survive.

No Inquest
It was announced that no inquest would be held. Theo. Lesperance, brother of the deceased, was seriously injured in an automobile accident south of Manitowoc on Highway 141, over a year ago and has never fully recovered from his injuries.

Funeral services for the deceased will be held Monday morning at nine o'clock from the home on School street, with interment at Pioneers' Rest.
