Pfc. Scott G. Davis Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Davis Sr., died Monday at Great Lakes Naval Hospital.
The 19 year old Air Force man was stricken with an incurable blood cancer in January while stationed in Japan with the 437th Troop Carrier Wing. His parents said they learned the disease resulted from a bruise their son received when a truck pinned him against a loading dock at a training camp. The illness was discovered after he had be transferred to overseas duty.
Two of Scott's buddies, the Olle twins, Dave and Bill, who have since been discharged and are now at home, lived in the same tent with young Davis at the 437th's base overseas.
Dave said Scott had reported often to sick call but the medics put him off with general treatment until January when his buddies joined the plea for a more thorough medical examination.
The Olles said the appeal brought an examination by staff doctors and their findings prompted an emergency flight to Tokyo.
Dave said in less than two days after the examination, Scott was put aboard a plane which had been ordered to make an emergency stop for the boy in its flight from Pusan to Tokyo. In Tokyo, Scott was transferred to a plane bound for the United States.
Pfc. Davis joined the 437th as a reserve in April, 1950 and was called up to active duty last August. The unit had been assigned to air lift operations in the Korean War.
Since his return to the United States in January, Private Davis has been hospitalized at Scott and Chanute Fields in Illinois, San Francisco military hospital, and at Great Lakes since Feb. 20.
He was graduated from St. Catherine's High School in June of 1950 and was a member of St. Lucy's Church, Holy Name Society and the Civil Air Patrol. He was active in sports while at Catherine's and played tackle on the football team.
Surviving are his parents; three sisters, Mrs. W.E. Bacon. Mrs. Gerald Kokke and Mrs. T.J. Broderick; and his grandmothers, Mrs. Mary Davis, Monticello, Ky.
Funeral services will be held Thursday in the funeral home and in St. Lucy's Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Caledonia.
