Vernon was born in Grinnell on June 14th, 1920 to parents Edward and Anna (Jones) Milligan. He graduated from Grinnell High School and Grinnell College, having earned his Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business. On November 22nd, 1956 Vernon was united in marriage to Doris McKibben at Central Christian Church in Marshalltown. The couple made their home in Marshalltown. Vernon worked at Swift and Company for a short while. He then purchased the Orpheum Coffee Shop, and later owned and operated Benny's Harmony Café for many years. Vernon went on to get his real-estate license in 1969, and worked for Holman Realty. In 1974, he opened Milligan Realty. He later obtained his appraisal license, merging his realty business, forming Milligan Realty and Appraisal Services. Vernon enjoyed drawing, loved working at the café, and especially loved time with his family.
Vernon will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Left to celebrate Vernon's life, and mourn their loss is his loving wife of 53 years, Doris; his daughters Jane (Alan) Borton, Sue (Jeff) Clapsaddle, Cindy (Jeff) Mann; his son Tim (Dawn) Milligan; his grandchildren Heather, Tristan, Tyson, Brittene, Danelle, James, Joe and Jim; his sister Margaret Barnes; many friends; and his beloved dog Tippy. In death, Vernon has rejoined his parents, his baby sister, his brother Edward Milligan, and brother-in-law Dave Barnes.
