Devoted father donated a kidney to his daughter in 1972

Native Staten Islander Jeremiah J O'Leary, 85, of Dongan Hills, a decorated World War II veteran and retired police captain who donated a kidney to his seriously ill daughter in 1972, died yesterday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center where he had spent the last two weeks.

Born in New Brighton, he moved to Dongan Hills in 1950, initially settling in the Berry Houses.

He graduated in 1942 from St Peter's Boys High School where he was profoundly influenced by the Christian Brothers.

Later he earned a bachelor of science degree (1972) and a master's degree in criminal justice (1976) from John Jay College of Criminal Justice Manhattan.

Mr. O'Leary worked for the NYPD former Housing Bureau for 21 years retiring at the rank of captain in 1980. Prior to that he was employed by the US Postal Service.

In 1972, he donated without hesitation a kidney to his daughter, Anne, at Mount Sinai Hospital after she was diagnosed with renal disease. The unselfish act inspired family and friends. Annie recovered from the surgery and died 12 years later in 1984.

Mr O'Leary served in the US Army as a combat medic in World War II achieving the rank of sergeant, assigned to the 10th Infantry Regiment, Fifth Infantry "Red Diamond" Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor. He later presented his Purple Heart to Anne, posthumously, as he felt she deserved it more than he..

In 1994, he visited France with his son, where he was awarded a commemorative medal for the 50th anniversary of the D-day invasion.

While stationed in Ballyedmond Northeast Ireland prior to the Normandy Invasion, Mr. O'Leary met his future bride, Josephine Hudson, in Kilkeel, County Down. They were wed in 1946 and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in June 2010
