CARBONDALE -- Alma Lorene (Basler) Medlen passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014.

Alma was born Aug. 28, 1924, to Fred and Mary (Sweitzer) Basler in Cobden. She was the eighth of eight children.

Alma graduated from Cobden High School in 1942 and attended St. Louis Business School in 1943. Alma then moved to Osborn, Ohio, with her cousin Alberta Basler and together they worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base during World War II.

After World War II Alma returned home to Cobden and began working for her brother-in-law, Dr. John Meredith. It was there that she met Charles who was working as an agent for the ICRR. He met her when he personally delivered packages to Dr. Meredith's office. They fell in love and were married for nearly 58 years.

Alma later worked for about 11 years at the Carbondale Clinic, and later Alma worked for Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, for 15 years before retiring and returning to Southern Illinois.

Alma and Charles enjoyed more than 20 years of "snowbirding" in Florida and enjoyed the many new friends they met during those winter months. They so enjoyed many other trips around the country and Europe.

Alma is survived by her son, Roger (Sharon) of Carbondale; her granddaughter, Renee Colombo (Ryan) of Herrin; two great-grandsons, Tyler and Trevor; a brother-in-law, Maury (Donna) of Washington State; and many nieces and nephews.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Medlen; grandson, Bradley; her parents, Fred and Mary Basler; three sisters, Margaret Brumleve, Frances Meredith and Helen Hamilton; four brothers, Raymond, Herbert, Alfred and Roy.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Carbondale. Burial will follow in Murdale Gardens of Memory in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 7, in Huffman-Harker-Walker Funeral Home.
