Ida Louise Elvira Altman, 83, of New Castle passed away on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Jameson Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Freedom, Pa.

She lived in Beaver Falls and New Brighton, Pa., before moving to New Castle 34 years ago. She was retired from St. Francis Hospital and spent her time reading and baking.

Survivors include her children, Arthur Altman of Beaver, Harold Altman of Albuquerque, N.M., Deborah Altman of New Castle, Janice Altman of New Castle, Donna L. Altman of New Castle and Shonda M. Layton of Youngstown, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Carl Thomas of New Brighton; three sisters, Janice Bacon and husband, Harrison, Brenda Harriel of Beaver Falls and Naomi Walker of Newark, N.J.; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Thomas, and mother, Prudence Thomas Allen; stepfather, Charles Allen; a daughter, Patricia Ann; two infant sons; and brothers Harold, William, Donald and Robert Thomas.

A visitation was held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009.A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at 3 p.m. in the New Castle congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2020 Willow Way, New Castle.The Leavell Funeral Home, Beaver Falls, Pa., is in charge of arrangements.Please sign the guestbook at www.legacy.com/ncnewsonline/Obituaries.asp.
