Augenstein John Ernest Augenstein, 77, of Columbus, OH, passed away on Wednesday, June 11, 2014, due to complications from cancer. He was born November 26, 1936 in Mount Vernon, OH to the late Wava Jean (nee Shilling) and William Henry Augenstein. John graduated from Mt. Vernon H.S. and then earned his bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University. He became an accountant and worked for the government and several social service agencies, but his passion was his career in the Navy, especially his service as a Naval Academy recruiter. When he retired, he had earned the rank of Captain. John's other passion was his wife, Carole, a social worker. They married in June 1964. Sadly, Carole passed away on July 28, 2012, after a 12-year battle with Alzheimer's. This June would have been their 50th wedding anniversary. John is survived by his brother, Wes Augenstein of Youngsville, PA; his brother's daughter, Laurie Burkholder of Chambersburg, PA; and his brother's son, Eric Augenstein of Tidioute, PA. On his late wife's side, he is survived by her niece, Johanna Kremer of Loveland, OH; nephew, Craig McQuilkin of Dublin, OH; and niece, Stephanie Boughton, of Yorkville, IL. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at 2pm at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Road. Prior to the service, the family will receive friends from 1-2 pm. Private inurnment Union Cemetery.
