Former policeman, 38, dies

Former Auburn police officer John H. Aandal, 38, died Tuesday at Tacoma General Hospital after an 18-month battle with cancer of the lung.

A resident of Auburn for nearly 20 years, Mr. Aandal was a patrol officer with the Police Department for 13 years before retiring in 1981. He had resided in Pacific for the past year.

Born Oct. 19, 1944, in Spokane, he grew up in Eastern Washington before coming to Auburn, where he worked as a welder and sheet metal man before becoming a police officer.

Veteran Auburn police officers remembered Aandal as an effective patrol officer, "a good street cop who got the job done."

Auburn police officers will act as honorary pallbearers and serve as an honor guard at services Friday. Many department members plan to attend.

After leaving the Police Department, Mr. Aandal worked again as a welder and sheet metal man, and was a member of Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 150 of Tacoma. He was a member of the Bible Chapel of Auburn.

He is survived by two daughters, Leslie Marie Aandal, of the home, and Julie Lynn Aandal of Milton, Wash.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John (Pete) Aandal of Algona; a sister, Mary Ann Aandal of Seattle and a brother, Tom Aandal of Algona.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Bible Chapel, 2606 R St. S.E.

Interment will be at Mountain View Cemetery, Auburn. Price-Helton Funeral Chapel, Auburn, is in charge of arrangements.

The family suggests memorials be to the Bible Chapel.
