Joyce Marie Barnhill, age 93, of Wharton passed away on Friday, July 4, 2014 in a Wharton care facility. She was born on February 15, 1921 in Eagle Lake, Texas to parents, Willis and R.J. Key Blackwell. Residing in the Eagle Lake area, Joyce attended school there.

She married Lawrence Everet Barnhill on December 20, 1941 in Wharton. He preceded her in death on March 28, 2001 after 59 years together. Joyce was a homemaker all her life and helped her husband with their farming and ranching business. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, ceramics, her wonderful pets, and canning fresh vegetables. Joyce was very active in Iago Federated Church where she was in attendance every Sunday and Wednesday until her health began to catch up with her.

In addition to her parents and husband, her sisters, Lois Boerner, Izora Rice, Darlene Loocke, Billie Gene Adams and Aileen Sanders, brother, J.W. Blackwell and son Tommy Barnhill preceded her in death.

Joyce Barnhill is survived by her son, Jimmie Edwin Barnhill and wife, Gentra of Wharton, sister, Juanita Geraldine Sanders and husband, Roy of Longview, sisters in law, Wilma Faye King and Joyce Blackwell. Grandchildren, Bill Barnhill and wife, Teri of Wharton, Emily Gertson and husband, Kris of East Bernard, and Laure Harrell and husband, Jerrod of Conroe along with great grandchildren, Cami Hill, Mason Harrell, Conner Gertson and Kyle Gertson, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Serving as will be pallbearers will be Bill Barnhill, Jerrod Harrell and Kris Gertson.


Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
