On June 17, 1944, Leona married Karl M. Heick, who preceded her in death on October 20, 2001. Surviving is her daughter, Judith (Joseph) Madden of New Carlisle, Indiana; her son, Ronald (Sue) Heick of South Bend, Indiana; grandchildren, Tiffany (Mauro) Palmero of Orlando, Florida, Jennifer (Brian) Kuhn of St. Louis, Missouri, and LeAnn (Dwayne) Osborn of Lafayette, Indiana. Brothers, Leonard and Raymond Kaplachinski both preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 PM Monday, June 20, 2005, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana where a Parish wake service will be at 7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, South Bend. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
Leona was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and the Altar and Rosary Society of the church. She had been employed with Indiana Bell, the former Bendix Corporation, Smoler Brothers, and Wilson Brothers Shirt Factory. She was also an avid card player and bowled at Beacon Bowl in various ladies leagues.
