Martha was the daughter of Justus and Philena Scott Arms. In 1870 Martha came with her brother, William Arms, to Clay County, Iowa. She homesteaded 80 acres and William homesteaded another 80. Martha kept house for her brother. She died before she "proved up" her homestead so William took over the whole 160 acres.
