Pratt, Kansas--Mattie Olive Proudfoot married Albert G Hilliard Nov 7, 1883 in Des Moines, Iowa and migrated with her husband and his 3 children to Kansas where they had 3 children of their own and she began to teach. She was a teacher very much in demand and by 1905 was the first woman superintendent of Pratt County schools. In 1906 A G Hilliard died in a accident and on Oct 19, 1911 Mattie married Herbert Haskins, he died in 1927 while they were visiting her children in California. Mattie retired in 1938 after 42 years in education. In 1950 the Board of Education unanimously voted to name the new elementary school in Pratt "Mattie O. Haskins School" and she attended the dedication. She died 3 years later at the age of 89.
