NEW HARBOR - Norman Russell Brackett, age 80, died at the Togus Hospice Unit, after a 2.5 year battle with cancer, on July 5, 2014. Born in New Harbor, ME on September 15, 1933, he was the son of Russell and Marion Brackett.

Norm began lobstering from a skiff at age 12, and by 15 he was working alongside his father's crew, purse seining for herring during the summer months. At age 16 he left Bristol High School to go fishing year round.

When called to serve his country, Norm left the coast of Maine to become a member of the 11th Airborne, stationed at Fort Campbell KY during the Korean War. He was a paratrooper and squad leader on the sharp shooting team.

After leaving the military, Norm fished with his father, and soon on his own. He was a charter member of the New Harbor Fisherman's Co-op, and put his home up as collateral with the other charter members of the Co-op.

Lobstering during the day, and playing saxophone in a band at night, kept Norm busy. He was known for his love of music, great sense of humor, great laugh, dancing blue eyes and easy smile.

In 1998, due to illness, Norm's fishing career that he loved, ended. In his later years, Norm was often seen at the Pemaquid Point Fisherman's Museum, telling his fishing stories to the visitors and imparting his love of the sea and its bounty.

He was predeceased by daughter, Candace ("Candy") Brackett Butler, for whom he named his boat. The boat the Candy B, and Normie Brackett, were synonymous up and down the Coast of New England.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra H. Brackett, who he married in 1983; his natural son, Russell K. Chandler and wife Dorothy of Ashland VA; daughters, Lisa Brackett of Monhegan, and Alyssa Jahn of Silver Springs, MD; adopted son, Peter M. Brackett of Jefferson; as well as 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

At Norm's request, a private burial with military honors, was held on July 8, 2014 at the New Harbor Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Norm's memory to The Fisherman's Museum at Pemaquid Point, PO Box 263, New Harbor, ME 04554; or to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, PO Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.

Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Condolences, and messages for the family, may be expressed by visiting: www.StrongHancock.com
