Sergeant Pilot FREDERICK JOHN POWELL DIXON Son of Frederick Alfred Dixon, C.M.G., D.S.O., and Ethel Howard Dixon, of Aldwick, Bognor Regis, Sussex.

He joined the RAFVR in Sept 1938 as Airman u/t Pilot and was called up on Sept 1st 1939 and went to 6 OTU Sutton Bridge on May 26th 1940.
After converting to Hurricanes he went to RAF Hendon on June6th posted for France where he joined 501 Squadron.

They covered the evacutation from Cherburg and reassmebled at RAF Croydon

501 Squadron formed in 1929 as Special Reserve

1939 to June 1940 based in France and Jersey

July 4th to RAF Middle Wallop

In Hurricane N 2348 Sgt Dixon was shot down by Obit Franziket of 111/JG27 in combat over convoy ten miles south east of Portland Bill at 8 am
Sgt Dixon baled out but was drowned and Weymouth Lifeboat failed to find him

He was later washed ashore in France and buried by the Germans at Abbeville.
