Mary Clary Sargent was graduated from Oklahoma City University, as was her sister Katherine Clary Corinth, in the 1930s. They went on to New York and had experience writing for Seventeen, Time and Newsweek. Together they co-authored several books in the 1960s and 1970s on etiquette, male manners, entertaining and fashion. Mary was an expert in rug hooking and authored "The Rook Book" with Alice Beatty. Mary made possible, through her estate, the Katherine and Mary Clary Endowed Chair of Creative Writing at Oklahoma City University.
Mary was married to David Sargent and lived most of her adult life in Westfield, NJ in an English Tudor home in the Wychwood neighborhood. Mary was active in The Presbyterian Church in Westfield among other civic activities.
After David's passing, she moved to Brandon Wilde in Evans, GA to be with her sister, bringing with her an extensive collection of teddy bears. Mary was active in the Brandon Wilde community, where she edited their newsletter. Mary would never use word processing, always depending on her typewriter for her writing activities.
