Peter Pietroske, 67, of 1137 Harbor St., Two Rivers, died at the Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, Thursday morning after a brief illness. Mr. Pietroske was a member of the city’s first paid firemen crew and an assistant fire chief for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Klein & Stangel Inc. Funeral Home, Two Rivers, and at 9 a.m. at the St. Luke Catholic Church. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Pietroske was born in the Town of Two Rivers, on Feb. 9, 1889, son of Peter and Julia Kortas Pietroske. When a young man he entered the life saving service in Manistee, Mich. The life saving service at the time patrolled Lake Michigan and later was integrated with the United States Coast Guard.

While in the service at Manistee, Mr. Pietroske married Miss Marie Bladzik in 1914 and the couple came to Two Rivers. He joined the life saving service in Two Rivers and served for four years.

During his service in the life saving station, Mr. Pietroske joined the Volunteer Fire Department and served in that organization until the department was transformed into a regular paid unit.

On Aug. 1, 1919, the late Edward Lahey took over the duties as the chief of the first paid fire department crew. At the time there were five members in the department including the chief. Other members were Pietroske, the late Charles Waskow, William Hoefert, now manager of the Commercial Hotel in Kewaunee, and Aloise Kott, who left the city many years ago.

Soon after the first paid fire department was organized, Pietroske was named assistant chief and held that post until he retired on Oct. 1, 1948.

Survivors include the wife, a daughter, Mrs. Anthony Soucoup, of Two Rivers; two sons, Edward of the United States Coast Guard Air Station at Traverse City, Mich., and Albert, at home; two sisters, Mrs. Norman LeClair and Mrs. Amelia Shekoski, of Two Rivers; three brothers, Anton and John of Two Rivers and Frank of Long Island, N.Y., and six grandchildren.
