609 Squadron was formed in 1936 at Yeadon West Yorkshire [ now Leeds Bradford Airport ] as the West Riding Auxiliary Squadron.

Sent to RAF Middle Wallop on July 6th 1940 with Spitfire MkI Fighters
Born in Chapel Allerton, Leeds and joined 609 Aux Squadron [ at Yeadon ] in 1937

Philip was a Trainee Mining Engineer, manager Brickworks at a Colliery owned by his mothers family.

Appointed Flight Commander 609 Squadron early 1939 was called up for full time service on Aug 24th 1939

On July 11th his Spitfire Mk I 1069 was severley damaged in combat with Bfs 109 of III/JG27 over a convoy off Portland. He was forced to bale out 5 miles off Portland Bill, picked up wounded, badly burnt and died before reaching land

Buried in Leeds Cemetery

His fellow 609 Squadron pilot PO Mitchell was also lost in this engagement.
