Alice Jane's father and my father were brothers. Alice Jane was a teen-ager when I was born, so we didn't know each other really well.

What I do know about her is that she was the friendliest, kindest, nicest person I have ever known. When she had extended family gatherings at her house she made sure my mother and I were invited. She was a loving, youthful mother and grandmother. She always made people feel comfortable and welcome in her presence.

After my mother's house burned to the ground, and she lost everything, Alice Jane took photographs of her family (including the only picture I have of my mother) and put them in an album and told my mother, "Now you have a family album." She also gave my mother clothing, and one blouse - pink, white and gray striped - my mother wore until her death, which was seven years after Alice Jane went to Heaven.

That Alice Jane was thoughtful enough to see that my mother (her aunt by marriage) had a family album was even more remarkable because at the very time she prepared this photo album, Alice Jane's husband died. Alice Jane married Vern right out of high school, and though she was grieving, she was kind enough to make sure that my mother had something of her own.

She usually had a dog and often had a formerly stray cat as a pet.

Alice Jane was the youngest daughter of Kenneth Russell Alspaugh and Ruth Alspaugh. She had three daughters and several grandchildren.

A special thanks to Alice Jane's classmate, Janet, who shared the graduation picture and notation on the back.

Alice Jane is in the front row, all the way to the left.
