Robert graduated from North Catholic High. He joined the Army and became a career soldier. While serving in Korea, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for valor in combat. He also earned the Purple Heart and South Korea's Hwarang Distinguished Military Service Medal with Gold Star. A parade was held in his honor when he returned to Philadelphia from Korea. He retired from the Army in 1972.
Robert was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, VFW Post 305, American Legion Post 125, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and the Pennock Street Gang.
Robert died June 25, 2014 at age 82. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen DeCola Avington (1934 - 2011), son Robert Jr., and brothers William and Daniel Avington. He was survived by two sons, one daughter, nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two brothers and a sister.
