Son of Alpheus W. and Charity (Galencia) Bancroft, both of Peabody, MA.


In 1859 he married Elizabeth S. Richardson, daughter of William H. and Elizabeth Richardson of Salem, MA. They had two daughters.


He was commissioned an officer in Company B, Massachusetts 17th Infantry Regiment on 21 Aug 1861 and mustered out on 12 Dec 1861.


Robert, a mason, enlisted in the 1st Massachusetts Sharp Shooter Company on 13 Sep 1862 and was mustered out on 03 Sep 1864.


Robert and his brother, George W. Bancroft, served together in the 1st Company, Andrew Sharpshooters.


Elizabeth died 10 Aug 1889 in Chester, New Hampshire, where she had been spending the summer. The funeral was held at her son-in-law's house, and she is likely buried near her husband.


Robert died on 23 Feb 1894 at Cambridge, Massachusetts, of a heart embolism. He was 57 years, 9 months and 16 days old.
