William Jefferson Gilliland Jr was born on August 6, 1905 in White Bluff, Dickson County, Tennessee, the son of William Jefferson Gilliland Sr (1875–1956) and Laura Lavada (Petty) Gilliland (ca May 1884–1965).
He moved to Nashville, Davidson County in 1925 with his parents. On March 31, 1930 he was married in Williamson County. Tennessee as the 1st husband of Tom Ella Hughes (1912–1980), the daughter of William Owen "W O" Hughes Sr (1869–1958) and Orell (Harbison) Hughes (1877–1954). {Tom Ella was married 2nd on March 20, 1948 in Lewis County, Washington as the 2nd wife of D F Rovella (ca 1913- ), the son of Michael Rovella and Rose (Contris) Rovella.}
Before his health began to fail, William was an active member of Davidson County Young Democratic Club, a civilian employee of the Army Air Forces Ferrying Command and served as Chief of Police at Municipal Airport. Living at 4203 Charlotte Avenue in Nashville, he was 37 years old and married when he died at home of lupus on March 19, 1943.
Survivors included his parents, his widow Mrs Tom Ella Hughes Gilliland, daughter Beverly Jane/Jean Gilliland and sisters Mrs E B Caldwell and Mrs Richard Denton, all in Nashville.
Funeral Services were held on March 22nd at Pettus & Owen Funeral Home, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery.
