Elzedie was one of seven children of L.A. and Margarette Stanphill. She first married David S. Dortch, and had a daughter, Sula, in 1879. David died when Sula was five.
On January 5, 1889, Elzedie married again, this time to Rev. Noah Wesley Hampton, who was twenty-two years her senior. (He had grandchildren older than their children). With him, she had three more children: Nora, Thomas Dolpha "Dolphie", and Alvey. She outlived her second husband as well. When she died, she was buried in the Starnes cemetery with her first husband.
