Miller Payne Holmes, 94, retired banker, died July 16, 2014 at his home in Ridgeland, MS. Services will be at noon Friday, July 18, 2014 at St. Peter's-by-the-Lake Episcopal Church, 1954 Spillway Road, Brandon, MS 39047. Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. in the Church. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Glenwood Cemetery, Yazoo City, MS under the direction of Stricklin-King Funeral Home.
Mr. Holmes was born September 14, 1919 in Yazoo City, MS to Herbert Holmes and Ethel Payne Holmes. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of the Yazoo City High School Band. He was selected as ‘Mr. Yazoo High' and graduated in 1937. He attended the University of Mississippi, graduating in 1941. While at Ole Miss he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and led ‘The Mississippians' dance band, playing in many venues around the state. After college he joined The Delta National Bank of Yazoo City, but his career was interrupted by service in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He participated as an artillery officer in several campaigns in the Pacific with the Fourth Marine Division, including Saipan and Iwo Jima. After the war, he returned to Yazoo City with his family to continue his banking career, which spanned over 40 years. He served as president of Delta National from 1972 until its merger with Deposit Guaranty National Bank in 1981. He continued with Deposit Guaranty for a time, serving on the bank's board of directors and as chairman of the advisory boards for the branch banks in Yazoo City and Vicksburg. After a brief period of retirement, he served from 1989 until 1994 with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in New Orleans. It was said that, if you visited him there, he would show you the town as if he had discovered it himself.
Miller Holmes was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Yazoo City until moving to Brandon in 1982. He then joined St. Peter's as it grew from mission to parish status. He served in leadership positions in both churches and as a delegate to Annual Council of the Diocese of Mississippi. His civic activities included service as president of the Yazoo County Chamber of Commerce and Delta Council, member of the Yazoo County Port Commission and Greater Yazoo Growth and Development Foundation, and supporter of Boy Scouts of America and Yazoo County United Givers Fund. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling as long as his health permitted.
While at Ole Miss he met his bride, the former Jean Barksdale of Jackson, MS. They enjoyed more than 72 remarkable years together with her extraordinary support of his business and civic activities. He said, "All it takes for a marriage to be successful is for one partner to be completely unselfish, and that is Jean."

Nelson (Howard), Posey Simmons McGraw (Brian), and Jacqueline Moak Vinson (Wynn); and three grandsons, Lt. Col. Andrew "Drew" Holmes (Bridget), Jason Moak (Michelle), and James Robert (Rob) Simmons, III (Anne), and fourteen great-grandchildren, William Logan Nelson, Anne Miller Nelson, Mary Lauren Nelson, Lucas Payne Holmes, Sophie Leighann Holmes, Lilla Riede McGraw, Katie Bell McGraw, Mamie McGraw, Hudson Simmons, James Robert Simmons IV, Madison Moak, Braleigh Moak, Lydia Vinson, and Moak Vinson.
