Winferd Hamilton Akens, son of John H and Esther Ann Akens, was born in Crawford Co., Pennsylvania, October 23, 1867 and died at his home in Portis, Kansas Thursday December 18, 1930, at the age of 63 years, one month and 25 days.
He came to Osborne County, Kansas with his parents in 1882, settling on a farm bordering the north branch of the Solomon River, 3 miles southeast of Portis. Here he resided most of his life.
He was married to Lydia B. Bowers, November 17, 1889 in a double wedding ceremony, with Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Arend, Mrs. Arend being a sister to Mrs. Akens. The two couples celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary together last November with forty members of their families present.
Winferd Akens has been a member of the A.O.U.W. for more than forty years and was also a member of the Knights and Ladies of Security.
He was converted and baptized and joined the Brethren Church of Portis under Rev. McFadden, November 26, 1903.
Most of his life was spent as a farmer and truckster, his farm on the river, being well adapted to the latter and was well know, in the surrounding towns, for the melons that he raised and sold.
At the time of his death, he was retired.
A better and more generous and loyal neighbor never lived. The widow, the orphan and the needy will miss his ministrations. He was among the first to offer services in time of sickness and he was a efficient and tender nurse. He was devoted to his church and its services and was a zealous and faithful follower of Christ.
The funeral services were conducted on Tuesday afternoon at the Portis Brethren Church, his six sons acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in the Downs cemetery.
