John married Esther Ann Warren of Steamburgh, Pa in 1863. They first came to Kansas in 1880, homesteading near Colby. They returned to Pennsylvania, but in the spring of 1882, John loaded an immigrant car to Kansas and returned first to a farm southeast of Portis, south of the Solomon River. The next year he bought a farm north of the river, where he lived for the next 42 years. John & Esther were the parents of 3 children. Maggie m; Charles Wintermute, Winferd m; Lydia (Bowers) & James m; Nellie (Eaton).
