Cummington – Charles J. Thayer, "Mr. Cummington Fair," 80, died Sunday in the Ashmere Nursing Home in Hinsdale.
He had lived on Thayer Corner Road, was a lifelong resident here and a prominent farmer. He had been involved with the Cummington Fair since 1904 when he first helped his grandfather set up the Ladies Aid Society tent where dinners were served.
He was born on March 4, 1899, the son of the late Clifford M. and Hattie (Dawes) Thayer.
As a young man he drove a school bus, operated a weekly errand service, and bought and sold horses.
He was also a member of the men's baseball team for many years.
He served as a selectman from 1950-1959. He was a member of the Finance Committee and president of the Hillside Agricultural Society.
Thayer had been president of the Cummington Fair for 25 years, beginning in 1950. He had served as president of the State Fair Association and was active in the Western MA Fair Association. He served as a director of the Middlefield Fair and was a past president and director of the Littleville Fair, having been associated with both for many years.
An avid participant in ox draws, he pulled oxen and horses in competition at fairs throughout New England and New York, winning many prizes. He popularized ox draws in Mineola, NY, when he introduced the contests at the fair there.
Thayer was also instrumental in passing several legislative acts to benefit agricultural fairs, and earned himself the title of "Mr. Cummington Fair."
He is survived by his brother, Leon D. Thayer of Cummington, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be at 2pm, on Wednesday in the Village Congregational Church. The Rev. Charles E. McEwan, pastor, will officiate.
The burial will be in the Dawes Cemetery in Cummington.
Calling hours at the Charles A. Bisbee Funeral Home in Chesterfield will be tomorrow from 7-10pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hillside Agricultural Society, in the care of Wyndom Morey, to provide prizes in the youth division.
