Alice Mabel Clark was born on January 30, 1865, in Sullivan County, Missouri. She was the daughter of Webster and Nancy J. Ewing Clark.

She had the following siblings: Harried E. Clark; Edward W. Clark; James Clark; and Walter S. Clark.

Alice Mable Clark and James William Glidewell were married on September 14, 1892.

They had three children: Leah Glidewell; Webb Glidewell; and Ruth Glidewell.

Mrs. Alice Glidewell Dies


Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Glidewell, Helena pioneer, who passed away at 3;30 a.m. Tueday at her home after a long illness, will be this Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at the Baptist church with Rev. C. E. Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope cemetery with the Cordray & Sons funeral home in charge.

Mrs. Glidewell, 87, had been a resident of this community since the opening of the Strip in 1892.

She is survived by three children, Mrs. Leah Torti, Memphis, Tennessee; Web of Helena; and Mrs. Ruth Getgey of Cincinnati, Ohio; one brother, Walter Clark of Milan, Missouri; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Her husband, J. W. Glidewell, died in February 1950.

Obituary – Alice Mable Clark


Alice Mable Clark was born near Milan, Missouri, January 30, 1865, and departed this life September 2, 1952, at the age of 87 years, 7 months and 3 days.

She grew to womanhood near Milan, Missiouri. On September 14, 1892, she was married to William Glidewell whom she had known since early childhood. They moved to Anthony, Kansas, soon thereafter where they lived until the opening of the Cherokee Strip. On September 16, 1893, Mr. Glidewell made the Run and staked a claim south of Helena. As soon as he built a house, Mother Glidewell joined him and here the three children, Leah, Web and Ruth were born.

Many happy years were spent on this original homestead. In 1929 after the children were established in their homes, Mr. and Mrs. Glidewell moved to Helena where she lived until her death.

She was united with the Helena Baptist church soon after it was organized where she remained a faithful member throughout her life. She was a charter member of the Helena Eastern Star and a member of the Helena Study Club. Throughout her life she was active in community affairs and contributed to the social growth of this area.

Mother Glidewell is survived by her three children: two daughters, Mrs. M. . Torti of Memphis, Tennessee; and Mrs. John Getgey of Cincinnati, Ohio; and son Web Glidewell of Glidewell of Helena; one brother, Walter Clark, Milan, Missouri; eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and a host of relatives and friends.
