Joan Francis Renner Hicks Adams, 72, of Charles Town, WV, became heaven's newest angel on July 19, 2014, four days short of her 73rd birthday.

Born July 22, 1941 in Winchester, VA, she was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Eva Kline Renner.

She was a graduate of Clarke County High School, class of 1960 and was of the Methodist faith.

Joan was a loving mother of four girls when she lost her first husband, Roy Hicks. At the time her oldest daughter was 15 and against all odds, she held her family together. Joan was the "second Mom" to scores of other youth who loved and respected her. Though saddened for their loss the family is thankful for the time they were able to spend with her.

God rewarded her with a second true love in Elmer Adams. Sadly Elmer also passed but strong family ties remained with his family, including a very close relationship with Elmer's mother until she passed and brother-in-law and her stepson. She was well loved by all she met.

She is survived by four daughters, Terry Brackett and husband, Jay of Charles Town and their family, James and Tabitha, Erin and Benjamin. James and Tabitha also graced her with a great grandson, Grant; Tammy Bryant and her husband, Todd, of Charles Town and their children, Kara Spencer, Zachary Webb and Joshua, Zachary and Austin Bryant; Toni Hicks Burns of Charles Town and her children, Michael and Daniel Burns; Tracy Hicks Pomales and her partner, Todd Bently of Charles Town, and their children, Colin and Alexis Hicks and Danielle Bently; step son, Larry Van Meter and partner, Laura Bryant of Martinsburg and their children, Derrick and wife, Vilene and a great granddaughter, Lily and a soon to be born sibling and our sweet Thera, whom she raised on her own. She is also survived by her two younger siblings, whom she loved deeply, Nancy Alt and husband, Jim of South Carolina; Ralph Renner and wife, Diane of Florida and brother-in-law and good friend, Nathaniel "Junior" Adams and brother-in-law, Mitchell Adams. Also sharing the family's grief are Joan's best friend Betty McCarey and Kilroy, her furry best friend.

Joan was preceded in death by husbands, Roy Hicks and Elmer Adams.

Though her body has ceased to live, her spirit continues in the lives and memories of all she touched.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV with Pastor Zelleapheane Siviero officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg, WV. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 7-9 pm.
