The obituary of Stephen T. Frazier as published in the March 7, 1963, issue of The Mountain Eagle newspaper:
Steve Frazier dies
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Thornton Regalar Baptist Church, Mayking, for Stephen T. Frazier, a Letcher County merchant for 50 years. The Rev. Ray Collins and the Rev. Robert Owens will officiate. Burial will be in the Frazier Cemetery, Whitesburg. Mr. Frazier died Monday morning at Ozona, Fla., where he had made his home for the past 13 years. He was 93 years old.
He was born in Letcner County and was a son of Solomon H. and Sarah Polly Frazier. He served as postmaster and police judge in Whitesburg and at one time was city policeman for Whitesburg. He was active in the Republican Party. He was a member of Mayking Regular Baptist Church. He and a brother ran a store in the building now occupied by Family Drug on Main Street until he moved his family to New Mexico because of health. The family lived in the West for four years, then returned to Whitesburg.
About 1917 Mr. Frazier built the brick building now occupied by H. B. Reedy Plumbing and Heating. In it he had Whitesburg's first motion picture theater and first pool room. Later he installed a feed store in the building, and finally he moved the store to the half of the building now occupied by Dr. J. B. Tolliver. There he ran his business for many years, until he sold it to Harrison and David Fields in 1950. In 1953 he moved to Florida, where he developed a subdivision on property he owned at Ozona.
His first wife, Mrs. Caroline Sumpter Frazier, died in 1937 and he later married Mrs. Ella Jane Blair Frazier, who survives him. Besides his wife, Mr. Frazier is survived by five children. John Frazier Brown, Alpha Frazier, Mrs. Sarah Bowen, Stephen Frazier Jr., and Elizabeth Jane Frazier; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
