Eugene Joseph "Gene" Karlin

Eugene Joseph "Gene" Karlin, 80, Hays, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the Hays Medical Center.

He was born March 1, 1934 in Catharine, Kansas the son of Frank A. and Elizabeth (Schueler) Karlin. On April 7, 1956 he married Thelma Rose Dreher in Schoenchen, Kansas. She died November 2, 2010. Gene served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1953 until 1959. He had a lifelong career in the oilfield and was co-owner of L-K Wireline & Acid, Inc. from 1972 until he retired in 2000. He continued to work independently in the oilfield until his death. He was a devoted husband, father of six children, eighteen grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.

Survivors include a granddaughter Erika Scoby and husband Luke, Hays and grandson Matthew Karlin and wife Rebecca of Great Bend, KS, son Brian Karlin and wife Gale of Hays, and their children Trent, Amanda, Dalton, and Paige, son Tom Karlin and wife Robyn, Atlanta, GA and their children Derek, Gabe, Jon, and Kaleigh, daughter Kathy Boggs and husband Steve, Shoenchen, and their children, Sara Branham and husband Carlos of Houston, TX, and Lacy, Hays, daughter Carol Fieler and husband Keith, Schoenchen, and their children Jade and Justin Herl, Victoria, KS, Chelsea and fiancé Trent Mauler of Great Bend, and Heidi of Hays, daughter Brenda Thomas and husband Brett, Houston, TX, and their children Zach, Haley, and McKenzie, six great grandchildren, Addison Karlin, Alyson Herl, Graycee Herl, Kyndall Branham, Layla Scoby, and Brady Karlin, sisters Agnes Sanders of Great Bend and Betty Burchfield of Lewisville, TX.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife Thelma, son Alan Karlin, his parents Frank and Elizabeth, brothers Martin, Eldon, Joseph, Robert, Francis, George, and Ervin Karlin and a sister Bertilla Wilson.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2014 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Hays. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call on Friday from 5:00 pm until 8:00 and on Saturday from 9:00 am until 9:45, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A parish vigil service will be at 6:30 pm on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church or to TMP-Marian High School, in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left for the family at www.haysmemorial.com
