In 1848 became an ordained Minister of the Gospel in the Methodist church. He was a travelling minister for fifty years. His tombstone reads

Preston Bland served in the Red River Blues Texas Ranging Calvary Unit during the Texas War of Independence against Mexico in 1836. His unit was responsible for taking Santa Anna into protective custody at the San Jacinto Battleground until he was delivered some months later to President Jackson in Washington DC. He received lands in Refugio Co. and in Red River Co. in the Republic of Texas for his service. He is recognized as an original Texas Ranger.
