OBITUARY
The Thursday, December 12, 1918 edition of the Greensboro Daily News included:

Mrs. Mattie Whittington Found Dead In Her Home
Resident of Vance Street Passed Tuesday Night or Yesterday Morning

Mrs. Mattie Whittington, about 35 years of age, died some time yesterday at her home, corner of Vance and McCulloch streets, where she was living alone. The deceased was last seen by neighbors Tuesday evening about 6 o'clock. Although it was said to be her norm to sleep late in the mornings, surprise was expressed by her sister when she was not seen up to 2 o'clock, as on Tuesday she complained of being slightly sick.

In response to a call from her sister, Miss [Mrs.] Bessie Hackett, Health Officer O'Brient and Patrolman Donavant hastened to her home, where they found the doors locked. At 4:40 o'clock they forced their way into the house and were startled to find the body of Mrs. Whittington stretched across the floor, hands above her head, and with all appearances of having fallen in this position. She was partially dressed when found and wore a kimona. On this account, the natural theory is that she died soon after arising yesterday morning, as the bed had the appearance of being slept in during the night.

Coroner G. L. Stansbury was called in, but decided quickly that an inquest was unnecessary. The body bore neither cuts nor bruises and foul play was not suspected...Funeral arrangements have not yet been [finalized].
