Dec. 17, 1899 - Anaconda Standard - Owen Thornton was accidentally killed in an mining accident involving the use of blasting powder. He left behind a wife, a young son, Eugene and a step-son James who was with him at the time of the accident.
Thornton was member of the GAR - Grand Army of the Republic as a Union veteran in the Civil War and he was a member of the A.O.U.W. He was 57 years old at time of death.

(On the death of Owen Thornton)
"During the civil war he served in the federal navy as a sailor, enlisting during the latter part of the conflict. He was very proud of his naval record. At the battle of Mobile bay he fought on the same boat with Admiral Dewey, who was then a young lieutenant. He was a member of Lincoln post No. 2, Grand Army of the Republic, which organization will have charge of the funeral services."
